Exploring Nairobi

November 5 – Nairobi and flight to Zanzibar

With our flight to Zanzibar being changed, we had 7 hours in Nairobi with no plans. We considered going to an elephant orphanage or a tea house, but we opted to hire a private driver for the day and visit a couple of forests hoping for some wildlife.

Our first stop was a small forested area behind Tamarind tree hotel where we saw a family of Vervet monkeys and a variety of birds. The monkeys were friendly and got within a few feet of us once we had been there for a few minites.

Baby vervet monkey

This munchkin was so little, it was still hanging onto its mom’s belly to move around.

Curious male vervet

This adult male was very curious and would get within a few feet of us. How do I know this is an adult male? Well, their balls turn blue around 2 years of age!

Sunbird

There were also numerous birds in the area, my favourite was this sunbird that was brilliant blue.

Next stop was Karura forest. This is the second largest urban forest in the world and it is over 2500 acres. We had no plans or really ideas of what was in the park so we started walking down a random trail.

We met an employee of the park who guided us to a waterfall and told us a bit about the wildlife in the park.

At first I thought the water was dirty, and I guess it is, but the soil in the area is a rich red-orange and when it rains this turns the water orange.

After additional delays, we finally took off. We had a stop at Kilimanjaro airport, thankfully we did not have to get off the plane. We landed in Zanzibar around 11:30pm. Our airbnb is pretty great, 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom, beach front, with a private pool.

Thanks for wandering with me,

Julie
