November 16 – safari drives and a visit to Talek
Looking out the tent this morning, you couldn’t see very far as it was incredibly foggy.
The area we have been in for the last couple of days usually has a higher density of leopards than other areas we have been and will be going; however, we have not seen a leopard on this trip yet. As a result, we spent the morning game drive in areas that leopards are more likely to habitate. The fog prevented us from seeing very far, but it also slowed the rate at which the sun heat up the environment so I was able to use Greg’s thermal scope to scan the areas we travelled through. The scope found many other animals, but still no leopards.
We did find a dik dik that was lit beautifully by the rising sun.

We also spent a few minutes with sleepy lion cubs, saw two baby crocodiles, and photographed a few birds.

Every trip to Kenya Greg collects physical and monetary donations for a local school. After breakfast in the bush with the group, Greg and I went into Talek, a nearby town, to purchase supplies with the monetary donations. The headmaster provided Greg with some textbooks that were the most needed. In addition, we also purchased exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, pencil sharpeners, chalk, clipboards, soccer balls, and bubbles.

As we were leaving, we noticed a baby donkey in the parking lot with its mom.

On our evening game drive we continued to look for leopards. Our guides did their best and talked to other guides; unfortunately, it seems that nobody has seen a leopard in the area in a few days.
We spent some time with a bloat of hippos and watched the sunset with a couple of lions.

Tomorrow we switch camps, leaving the Masai Mara and heading to Naboisho conservancy.
Thanks for wandering with me,
Julie
